All Inclusive Playground

In 2022, Harrisburg Township Park District (HTPD) was the recipient of an Open Space Lands Acquisition and Development  (OSLAD) Grant for the development of an Inclusive Playground area at the Bill Rice Memorial Soccer Complex.  The project consisted of an Inclusive Playground area, a walking path with access to all the soccer fields and the bathrooms, and a set of ADA accessible bleachers at the main soccer field.  The goal of the project was to develop the Soccer Complex into more than just soccer fields that only get used seasonally throughout the year.  The Park District envisioned an accessible park facility that could be enjoyed all year long, benefiting everyone in the community.

Inclusive Playgrounds acknowledge more than providing an accessible piece of equipment.  They go a step further, creating and designing a playset that all persons can enjoy.  Inclusion is the groundwork of developing a space where every member of a community feels welcome.  Inclusive playgrounds are preferred because they provide multiple uses of equipment for persons of different abilities, skills, and conditions.  These playgrounds promote dignity, understanding, and respect for all people, and not just persons with disabilities or illnesses. Inclusive playgrounds allow people the opportunity to play alongside their loved ones.

Construction of the Inclusive Playground area at the Soccer Complex was completed in the Spring of 2024 and the facility has seen much use and positive feedback.  This project fully illustrates the Park District’s ongoing commitment to accessibility and inclusivity.  Everyone is welcome to come use this facility.
